Biografilm Festival – International Celebration of Lives, the film festival that explores the new tendencies about international documentaries and fictions, is back in Bologna from the 14th to the 21st of June. This Festival has always focused on Tales about Lives and for its 14th edition, more than ever, the main character is Biography: there will be many premieres of long-waited films that depict the best Art and Culture’s personalities on an International level.
JANE FONDA is the main character of JANE FONDA IN FIVE ACTS, the HBO documentary directed by Susan Lancy, award-winning director and producer (14 Emmy, 3 IDA Award). The film was presented and acclaimed at many International Festivals as the Sundance Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival and it will be on an exclusive tv premiere on Sky Cinema from this Autumn.
ORSON WELLES is unveiled in Mark Cousin’s THE EYES OF ORSON WELLES. The film was just presented at the last Cannes Film Festival and it is an amazing experience in which the audience have an exclusive access to Citizen Kane’s director’s personality: from his sketch and paintings to his brilliant mind, the film investigates how such an amazing personality is still relevant today.
PETER GREENAWAY, director, painter and artist – who was awarded last year with the Celebration of Lives Award – drag us in his world through an amazing conversation with his daughter in THE GREENAWAY ALPHABET, directed by his wife Saskia Boddeke.
In MCQUEEN Ian Bonhôte tells the story of the famous stylist ALEXANDER MCQUEEN and his complicated life in balance between despair and inspiration. This film is the celebration of a radical and hypnotic genius who had a deep influence on the contemporary artistic panorama.
The world premiere of Carlos Saura’s RENZO PIANO: THE ARCHITECT OF LIGHT is the first film entirely dedicated to RENZO PIANO: a portrait that turns into a reflection about a creative process.
For a world premiere at Biografilm there is a film about the Italian cartoonist IGORT. MANGA DO. IGORT E LA VIA DEL MANGA keeps track of Igort’s second travel across Japan: it focuses on Igort experiences and emotions while he’s sketching landscapes and people he finds on his way, reflecting about time and about a foreign culture that influenced him so much.
HARUKI MURAKAMI, or maybe it’s better to say his Art through the eyes of whom is called to translate his novels, is the main character of DREAMING MURAKAMI, directed by Nitesh Anjaan, a film in a constant swinging between dreams and reality and, as it often happens in the author’s novels, it opens the gates to new and amazing paths.
From Japan we move to Marseilles to learn about JEAN-CLAUDE IZZO in JEAN CLAUDE-IZZO –MEDITERRANEO NOIR by Paolo Borraccetti. Leafing through the pages of Jean-Claude Izzo’s most famous novels, Fortunato Cerlino (Don Pietro Savastanoin Gomorrah), tells us the story of one of the most important authors of the Twentieth Century and one of the masters of the Mediterranean Noir genre.
Both in the International Competition section and both about musicians there are two films presented as unmissable premieres: the stories of the popstar M.I.A - leading MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A directed by Steve Loveridge - and the one of the amazing musician and experimenter CHILLY GONZALES in SHUT UP AND PLAY THE PIANO by Philipp Jedicke.
THE FESTIVAL BEFORE THE FESTIVAL
Biografilm Festival expands beyond the spaces and timing of the usual cinematographic scheduling: the film in the competitive sections will be presented as premieres between the 14th to the 21st of June, but there will also be many Biografilm events: between the 10th and the 14th there will be a date with the Biografilm Series, for the first year at the Festival, where there will be previews of many series from all over the world. From the 1st to the 22nd of June there is the daily appointment with Biografilm Park, that offers a large selection of events as free concerts, a food space and afternoon activities for children and the youngers. Many Italian and International guests will play on Biografilm Park’ stage: Bud Spencer Blues Explosion (Friday the 1st), Colapesce (Sunday the 3rd), Coma_Cose (Tuesday the 5th), Willie Peyote (Thursday the 7th), a dj set by Lo Stato Sociale (Tuesday 12th), Giant Sand (Thursday 14th for Biografilm Festival opening cerimony ), Lali Puna (Friday the 15th) and, for the last night on the 22th, Eugenio in via di Gioia. The perfect soundtrack for the next Biografilm Festival.
