Dream empire

Contemporary Lives

To sell a home is to sell a dream, a lifestyle. Yana, who left the countryside to invest in real estate in the midst of China's boom, is well aware of this. His agency builds "virtual cities" in remote, rural areas of China to convince foreign buyers that they’ll be living in vibrant international hubs, and to sell above market prices. A scam yes, but a brilliant one: four people are enough to turn the village of Chongqing into a metropolis. When the real estate market begins to collapse, however, the castles built in the sky by Yana start to crumble... A film that offers a surreal and revealing insight into the madness of the global housing market.
