Environmental Sustainability

Biografilm Festival adheres to the Festival Green project of AFIC (Associazione Italiana Festival Cinematografici), as well as being part of the working group that led to the creation of a practical and operational Festival Green Guide to decrease the environmental impact of film festivals.

Biografilm Festival implements several operational strategies for reducing the event's environmental impact. First, the Festival aims each year to minimize the use of plastic materials and maximize the reuse economy and waste separation operations. This goal is achieved thanks to the collaboration with the energy and environmental services supply multi-utility for Emilia-Romagna Gruppo Hera, Premium Partner of the event. Several waste sorting points are set up at all locations and information is placed to raise awareness of recycling among participants. For proper waste sorting in the municipality of Bologna, the festival points out the Il Rifiutologo app, the official app of the multi-utility Hera for proper waste sorting guidance.

For the 2024 edition, the Festival pledged to minimise CO2 emissions by launching a new circular economy project, called Old to New - Bio Fund. During the days of the Festival, a temporary shop was set up in Piazzetta Pier Paolo Pasolini with gadgets from past editions, otherwise destined for disposal, available for free. The proceeds of this initiative allowed to invest in a project for offsetting CO2 emissions: Biografilm in fact collaborated with OlivaMi, an association that reforest the olive groves of Salento damaged by the Xylella epidemic. With the proceeds of the Old to New - Bio Fund initiative 30 new olive trees were planted, contributing to offset 7.2 tons of CO2.

With a view to reducing plastic consumption, the management of the event's catering service includes the use of disposable plastic dishes for serving food, which are replaced with dishes made of compostable materials. The official coffee of Biografilm 2024 is Albero del Caffè, which combines the quality of its product with respect for the environment and the conditions of the workers involved in the entire production process.

In addition, the collaboration with Acqua Pura Bologna continues, which also for the 2024 edition will set up four drinking water dispensers accessible free of charge and without restrictions in the Festival locations.
We also mention, on Via Azzo Gardino, “Casa dell'Acqua” a dispenser on tap of fresh natural (5 cents/liter), lightly carbonated and sparkling water (10 cents/liter). It works with coins (5,10, 20, 50 cents and 1 and 2 euros) or rechargeable cards that can be purchased in the nearby Costa Center.

Already in 2022, the Festival is committed to decreasing the amount of non-recyclable materials used by significantly reducing the amount of printed catalogs and day-by-days, opting for distribution only at strategic points and at the request of the user. In addition, for the year 2024 program and catalog have been combined into one material so as to ensure a substantial reduction in overall foliation and FSC paper has been used. In addition, the Festival encourages the purchase of tickets and accreditation online. For 2024, the badges were made of Bio PVC, made of recycled material and easily recyclable at the end of the event.

This year's set-ups, updated with the event's new logo where possible, are made in such a way that they can be easily updated and reused in future editions. If this is not possible, the Festival is committed through cooperation with the Hera Group to the proper disposal of the materials used. In addition, for years, the Festival has been equipped with a portion of supports and structures that allow them to be customized each year without having to be repurchased.

Within the work team, Production Director Riccardo Volpe has been appointed to oversee the implementation of sustainability actions planned by the festival organization.
