In Settime D’Asti, a small village in Piedmont, there is a unique elementary school. A single classroom, nine children aged between six and ten: they are all children of immigrants. Born or raised in Italy, they speak Italian, but for many they are still not considered “Italian”. As the country ages and empties, the mayor, calling the school “a ghetto”, decrees its closure. This will be their last year. Then, the children will be sorted among neighboring towns. A film made up of little everyday tales: friendships that blossom, conflicts, laughter. There’s a clash between the life within this class made of relationship and growing, and the life outside this class like a dying village that prefers to close the school instead of accepting mi-grants which represent the only hope for the village’s future. The movie is not just the story of a school closing down. It’s a journey into the heart of our immediate future, seen through the eyes of those who are building that future, day after day.
