CAN WE WRITE REALITY? A workshop by Francesca Sofia Allegra

A Workshop by Francesca Sofia Allegra.

“Documentaries Are Written in the Editing Room.” This profound truth was at the heart of the masterclass held on March 7, which attracted significant interest and engagement.

During the session, participants gained insight into what it means to be a documentary editor. They explored the editor’s role as a witness to the transformation of raw footage into compelling narratives—a process that reveals the limitless potential of storytelling. As documentary filmmakers, their mission is to portray reality. Yet within every frame of footage lies a multitude of possible stories. Often, the narrative originally envisioned recedes into the background, making way for an entirely new and unexpected story that emerges through the editing process itself.

This is the transformative power of the editing room: the ability to embrace radical change and remain open to the unexpected—a mindset that is essential for any thoughtful storyteller. More than just a workshop, the masterclass was an exploration of lessons learned, challenges faced, and the evolution of the craft through collaboration with respected colleagues.

Among the case studies discussed was Here I Am, directed by Marc J. Francis, an observational documentary filmed over the course of a year between New York City and Detroit. The film follows the transformative journey of Syrian-American musician Rayya Elias as she embarks on a romantic relationship with bestselling author Elizabeth Gilbert, while attempting to record her first music album during the final twelve months of her life.

The documentary required more than six years of editing and went through countless iterations, involving multiple editors and numerous unsuccessful attempts before finally finding its true form in 2024. This lengthy process highlights a crucial lesson: documentary filmmaking is a collaborative endeavor—a dance between the material, the editor, the director, and the producers, all of whom must trust and respect the organic rhythm of the creative process.
