Led by Dr. Gaia Farina

This training session addresses diversity and discrimination through the lens of action-research projects conducted by the researcher in Italian schools. Drawing on the voices of children and young people, video interviews, and classroom practices, the session offers tools for recognizing processes of racialization, moving beyond oversimplified approaches, and fostering a sense of justice and meaningful dialogue in the classroom.

The training session will be preceded by a brief presentation of the educational toolkit available at biografilmgenerazionidigitali.it and of IWonderScuole, the classroom streaming platform that forms an integral part of the project.

Gaia Farina is an Adjunct Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Padua and a Research Fellow within a PRIN project on mobility and borders. She holds a PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Padua and a degree in Communication Sciences from the University of Bologna. Her research focuses on migration, racism and anti-racism, youth studies, and media studies, employing collaborative and visual methodologies. Together with Annalisa Frisina and Alessio Surian, she developed an anti-racism educational toolkit for schools, contributing to teacher training on inclusive educational practices and digital tools.

Led by Prof. Paolo Martinelli (Archilabò and the University of Bologna, Department of Philosophy), Prof. Simone Soranna (University of Milan and Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan), and Prof. Adriano Sforzi (University of Bologna, Blow-up Academy, Ferrara).

This training session provides practical guidelines on how to use cinema in educational settings: films as a support for teaching, a tool for developing critical thinking and empathetic listening, and a starting point for self-narrative activities. When used as a tool for active learning, cinema can become the voice and perspective of students, enabling them to share emotions, identities, and their ways of seeing the world.

Paolo Martinelli holds a PhD in Philosophy, Science, Cognition and Semiotics and conducts research in interpretive and cognitive semiotics. His work focuses on the digital transformation of culture, new literacies, digital inclusion, and learning processes. He is involved in national and international research projects and collaborates with European institutions. He is also President of the social cooperative Archilabò.

Simone Soranna is a certified practitioner of Visual Education in Schools and teaches Film Studies at the University of Milan and Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan. He is Editor-in-Chief of CineCriticaWeb, a journalist, and a correspondent for Sky Cinema. He founded the film portal LongTake.it and has authored several books on animation cinema. He collaborates with film festivals, cultural institutions, and cinemas, working in programming, film criticism, and cultural promotion.

Adriano Sforzi is a filmmaker and certified practitioner of Visual Education in Schools, actively engaged in film education and training. He collaborates with Pop Up Cinema Scuole, the Cineteca di Bologna, and the Florestano Vancini School of Cinematic Arts. He has extensive experience as a writer and director of award-winning short films and documentaries, including Jody delle giostre (winner of the David di Donatello Award in 2011) and L’equilibrio del cucchiaino (Audience Award and Jury Award at the Biografilm Festival in 2015). He has worked with Ermanno Olmi, Guido Chiesa, and Luca Lucini. His work combines artistic research, social engagement, and audiovisual education.

When: Tuesday, 14 April, 5:00–7:00 PM

Audience: teachers of all school levels, the wider educational community, and families
