The Red Sheep portrays the life and work of the celebrated Italian fashion photographer and Mussolini’s granddaughter, Maria Vittoria Backhaus. From a childhood spent hidden in a monastery to escape the persecution of the Mussolini family, to her embrace of communist ideology in the 1960s, and finally to the glamorous world of Milanese fashion, Maria Vittoria takes us on a journey through her life and her irreverent creativity. Her photo-graphs and reflections reveal a personal and unmistakable vision of the world: from the role of women in a male-dominated society to the ironic critical spirit that has shaped every choice in her life. Through a weaving together of Maria Vittoria’s archival photographs, interviews with leading figures from Italian fashion and contemporary culture, and a range of aesthetic strategies that evoke her creative universe, The Red Sheep emerges as an intimate and warm portrait of a revolutionary personality, a tireless artist, and an inspiring woman.
