Biografilm remembers, with affection and gratitude, Jeremy Thomas — one of the most controversial and acclaimed producers of all time, who changed the face of international arthouse cinema.
In 2022 he was a guest of the Festival in a double role: the subject of The Storms of Jeremy Thomas, the intimate and poetic road movie that Mark Cousins dedicated to him, and the recipient of the Celebration of Lives Award.
Interviewed during the Festival about Cousins’ film — which follows him on a car journey to Cannes — Thomas said:
I’m quite happy with the film Mark made […] it was an intimate journey, I was just myself, I drove my car, he filmed, we stopped where and when we felt like it, we had a completely free schedule. We really had a great time and shared some very profound moments during the trip.
Thomas’ bond with Italy was deep and lasting, thanks to his long-standing friendship and collaboration with Bernardo Bertolucci, with whom he produced The Last Emperor (Oscar for Best Picture in 1988), The Sheltering Sky, Little Buddha, The Dreamers, and Stealing Beauty.
Among the other directors he worked with: Cronenberg, Wenders, Garrone, Skolimowski, Roeg, Kitano, and Gitai.
