Real life stories to understand the present

Brave New Cinema is a project of national significance curated by ZaLab in collaboration with Progettomondo, Biografilm, Luce Cinecittà and a network of numerous partners , funded as part of the National Cinema and Images for Schools Plan promoted by MIC and MIM.

The project, now in its third year, over the course of the 2024/25 school year, through screenings and classroom film workshops with teachers and industry professionals, has led students to become cultural organizers from mere spectators. In fact, the men and women designed and produced a final video content (a short film, an interview) from socially relevant topics covered in the film chosen from the catalog (documentary or animation). In each region involved - Trentino, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Abruzzo, Campania, Sicily, Calabria, Puglia, Umbria and Friuli - final events open to the public, giving back to citizenship, took place in May, during which the students presented the films chosen from the catalog to the public and their work.

This year's edition was titled “Sognare il Presente” because it addresses the most pressing contemporary issues by browsing a film catalog designed to explore the values of courage, emotions, relationships, nature and respect for others. With a selection of Italian and international short and feature films, the project encourages imagination, critical reflection and action and invites students and faculty to explore through film the contemporary challenges and emotions that characterize our time.

The final event takes place in the setting of the 21st Biografilm Festival in Bologna: Tuesday, June10 at 7:30 p.m. at Cinema Lumière, Scorsese Hall. A delegation of high school students from the various regions involved in the project will present the short films made during the workshops. This is followed by a screening of the film Mr. Nobody Against Putin by David Borenstein and Pavel Ilyich Talankin, in its Italian premiere, and an in-theater interview and debate with the directors curated by the students in the hall.

In Emilia-Romagna, Arrigo Serpieri High School in Bologna and I.I.S. Bartolomeo Scappi in Castel San Pietro Terme (BO) have joined the project.
