Sereti Nabaala is the young leader of a growing movement challenging violent, gender-based practices in Kenya. In her private life, she explores her desire and the possibility of clitoral reconstruction, a surgery that could restore sensation to a body marked by past trauma. This path clashes with her community’s beliefs, especially those of her mother, deeply rooted in tradition. Seeking to redefine herself beyond judgment, Sereti travels to Geneva in search of new perspectives on healing. There, she encounters women navigating similar questions, including Michela Villani, an Italo-Swiss sociologist whose research on sexuality and female genital cutting intersects with personal experience. Through these encounters, and with the support of Dr Jasmine Abdulcadir, Sereti begins to see healing as a complex journey shaped by identity, memory, and desire. Back in Kenya, she turns this process into collective action, initiating an alternative, non-violent rite of passage for young girls.
