Environmental Sustainability

Biografilm adheres to the Festival Green project of AFIC (Italian Association of Film Festivals), as well as being part of the working group that led to the creation of a practical and operational Festival Green Guide to decrease the environmental impact of film festivals.

Biografilm has implemented several operational strategies for reducing the event's environmental impact. First, the Festival aims each year to limit the use of plastic materials and maximize the reuse economy and waste sorting operations. This goal has been achieved thanks to the collaboration with the energy and environmental services supply multi-utility for Emilia-Romagna Gruppo Hera, Premium Partner of the event. At all locations, several points for waste sorting are set up and information is placed to raise awareness of recycling among participants. For proper waste sorting in the City of Bologna, the festival points out the Il Rifiutologo app, the official app of the multiutility Hera for a correct guide to waste sorting.

For the 2025 edition, the Festival has continued its commitment to the environment, keeping high the goal of reducing CO2 emissions and equipping itself with the tools that will enable the event to become sustainable in as many aspects of its supply chain as possible. In fact, this year's partners include the non-profit organization Phoresta ETS, which carries out consulting activities for companies, businesses and even festival realities in order to ensure a correct and complete calculation of the carbon footprint and guide its users toward the fulfillment of the goals of Agenda 2030, in addition to carrying out conservation and planting projects for forests and wooded areas in the national territory. The engagement with Phoresta will allow us to plant 100 new trees in the Sabbiuno location in the Apennines of Bologna and to begin a more precise calculation of emissions through the administration of questionnaires to the public in order to learn about the impact of visitors. The questionnaires are available on different channels in order to ensure the capillarity of the survey: on our website, on social media and in the newsletter, through communications addressed to accredited people and through QR codes in our printed catalog, in the foyers of cinemas and at our info desk in Piazzetta Pasolini.

This intervention is a first step toward a comprehensive calculation of our emissions. At the end of the festival, in collaboration with the Biografilm Campus educational department, a workshop will also be held in schools, with the support of ReMida - Terre d'Acqua, to raise awareness among citizens, guests and spectators about the importance of environmental protection and re-narrating waste. At the end of the festival, advertising materials from previous editions will be donated to ReMida in order to give them new life and be able to reuse them.

With a view to reducing plastic consumption, the management of the event's food service includes the use of reusable tableware, thanks to the collaboration with Leila - The Library of Objects and the Social Center “August 2, 1980” or made of compostable material. The Festival prefers quality food products from companies in Emilia-Romagna. The official coffee of Biografilm 2025 is Albero del Caffè, which combines the quality of its product with respect for the environment and the conditions of the workers involved in the entire production process.

In addition, the collaboration with Acqua Pura Bologna continues, which also for the 2025 edition has set up three drinking water dispensers accessible free of charge and without restrictions at the Festival locations. They are located at our info desk in Piazzetta Pasolini, Biografilm Hera Theatre | Pop Up Cinema Arlecchino, and Sympò, coworking area and press office headquarters. The other festival locations have independently equipped themselves with drinking water dispensers; therefore, they are available and accessible at all Biografilm locations.
We also point out, in Via Azzo Gardino, the “Casa dell'Acqua", a dispenser on tap of fresh natural (5 cents/liter), lightly carbonated and sparkling water (10 cents/liter). It works with coins (5,10, 20, 50 cents and 1 and 2 euros) or rechargeable cards that can be purchased at the nearby Costa Center.

For this edition, in collaboration with Acqua Pura Bologna, an informational questionnaire will be administered to our visitors to raise awareness of the state of water pollution. The questionnaire is available on-site on QR codes placed on the dispensers. The initiative is part of a virtuous circle to create environmental culture in our local community.

Various waste sorting points are set up at all Festival locations and placed informational notices designed to raise awareness of recycling and direct participants to the proper use of waste collection points. For proper waste sorting in the municipality of Bologna, the Festival points out the Il Rifiutologo app.

Materials used in the set-up of this edition of Biografilm, which cannot be reused on future occasions, will be recycled thanks to the collaboration with Premium Partner Hera.

As early as 2021, the Festival has committed to decreasing the amount of non-recyclable materials used by significantly reducing the amount of printed catalogs and programs, opting for distribution only at strategic points and at the request of the user. Also for the year 2025 program and catalog have been combined into one material so as to ensure a substantial reduction in overall foliation, and FSC paper has been used. In an increasingly sustainable perspective, this year the Festival has made sure to reduce even more the use of printed paper by at least 10 percent compared to the previous one, favoring an increasingly digital communication and promotion, in accordance with the guidelines dictated by the Emilia-Romagna Regional Agency for Prevention, Environment and Energy - ARPAE. For 2025, the badges have been made of environmentally sustainable material, so that they can be easily recycled after use.

Biografilm invites its audience tickets and accreditation in digital format to help further reduce paper production and support the organization toward a sustainable transition.

As of 2022, Biografilm has started making part of the set-ups that do not bear specific indications about the current edition, and even for 2025 it has been possible to reuse materials from previous editions. Atyd, our partner and supplier, made the new set-ups from FSC-certified cardboard or other easily recyclable material. The Festival is committed, thanks to the cooperation with Hera Group, to the proper disposal of the materials used. In addition, for years, the Festival has equipped itself with a portion of supports and structures that allow them to be customized each year without having to be repurchased.

With a view to avoiding waste, this year kits were distributed exclusively for accredited persons, with everything needed to access the screenings inside. The materials made for accreditors include: lanyards made of environmentally sustainable R-PET, bags made of recycled and recyclable cotton, and accreditation badges made of recycled pvc. The same choice was applied for the operational kits for Guerilla Staff volunteers, to whom were distributed T-shirts, made of organic cotton and bags, made of cotton and necessary for the performance of their activities to be recognizable. In addition to the newly produced materials, leftovers from previous editions were also made available to volunteers.

Through these practices, the Festival promotes a more sustainable and responsible events industry, contributing to the conservation of natural resources and the reduction of waste. Furthermore, Biografilm's commitment to sustainability is reflected not only in its operational and logistical choices, but also to the selection of films presented. Over the years, Biografilm has made a conscious choice to include in its Festival cinematographic works that address issues related to environmental sustainability. This is because we firmly believe that cinema has the power to raise awareness about the preservation of the earth. Through films we strive to promote greater awareness about the responsibility that each of us has with respect to the environment.

Within the working team, starting in 2023, Production Director Riccardo Volpe has been appointed as the person responsible for overseeing the implementation of sustainability actions planned by the Festival organization.
