WATCH THE PRESENTATION VIDEO
Through the video, all the different sections of Biografilm come alive: from the International Competition, which features the best documentaries from all over the world, to the special focus on France within the section Biografilm Europa, to the many Contemporary Lives recounted in the homonymous section, which take a closer look at various nowadays crucial subject-matters, to the broad selection of Italian documentaries presented in the Biografilm Italia section, and lots more.
They're all stories that reach the wider public and often achieve the aim of broadening horizons and making life better.
An extensive programme that allows Biografilm Festival to rightfully place itself in the panorama of the most affirmed European festivals and brings forward, through its generous offer to the city that rewards it with great attendance, the meeting of the pleasures that make life so sweet: food, music and cinema.
In the studios of MyMovies we announced the first previews that will be part of the next edition of Biografilm. The Festival will take place from the 7th to the 17th of June at the Manifattura delle Arti district and in another 8 cinemas across the city centre of Bologna.
Let's begin with the International Competition, traditionally composed of 10 Italian Premieres of some of the best documentaries discovered by international festivals and even some World Premieres.
KEMP. MY BEST DANCE IS YET TO COME
by Edoardo Gabbriellini
An elegant and intriguing portrait of Lindsay Kemp. Ballet dancer, mime, choreographer, director: his works range from stage to screen, from Shakespeare to Nosferatu. A mask that has inspired many,
including Derek Jarman and David Bowie. The actor and director Edoardo Gabbriellini returns to Biografilm Festival with this astounding World Premiere.
COLD CASE HAMMARSKJÖLD
by Mads Brügger
Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Belgium
The director Madds Brügger already drew attention in 2011 with a peculiar documentary in which he pretended to be an ambassador. He now brings to Biografilm a truly astonishing investigative documentary. The Secretary of the UN Dag Hammarskjöld died in a plane crash in 1962 and the filmmaker believes this was a murder. This film proves it.
Brügger won the Directing Award at Sundance 2019 and newspapers from around the world have confirmed the facts presented.
by Garret Price
In International Premiere following a very warm reception at Sundance, here comes the film dedicated to the life of Anton Yelchin. Known to the general public for his role as Pavel Chekov in the 2009 film Star Trek, Anton has been fighting against an incurable disease since he was very young.
A balanced and intimate film: a powerful parable on the impossibility of fighting death and the unpredictability of life.
by Pia Hellenthal
Presented at Berlinale and Hot Docs, the film tells the story of Eva, a young Italian woman living in Berlin. Model, poet, sex-worker, Eva is the symbol of a fluid generation; she is able to narrate her own identity and inhabit it at the same time. Pia Hellenthal stylishly portrays a story that is worth knowing.
by Hassan Fazili
USA, Qatar, UK, Canada
Praised at Berlinale and Sundance, where it won the Special Jury Award, Biografilm presents the Italian Premiere of this small miracle of an autobiography. When the Taliban put a bounty on his head,
filmmaker and cinematographer Hassan Fazili sets off on a journey with his wife and two young daughters, narrating in first person the dangers faced by those who are forced to escape their home countries in search for help.
Focus on France within Biografilm Europa
Biografilm Europe gathers every year the best biopics and soul stories of the European production. This year, a special focus is dedicated to France. Actor Fabrice Luchini will be in Bologna to receive the Celebration of Lives Award and present the Italian premiere of his new film LE MYSTÈRE HENRI PICK.
LE MYSTÈRE HENRI PICK
by Rémi Bezançon
In a small town of Britanny, a library of unpublished manuscripts reveals a masterpiece of the 1900s: The Last Hours of a Love Story. It is met with enormous success. Then comes spoil-sport Luchini,
who plays the role of a literary critic who doesn’t believe that the masterpiece could have been written by the town’s pizza maker, the same Henri Pick of the title. A whodunnit without corpses, where the spectator just wants to find out who wrote the novel of the century.
by Patrick Cassir
Marion and Ben are 30 years old, they both live in Paris and meet on Tinder... and that’s just about all they have in common. She is intrepid and loves adventure, he is tidy and a hypochondriac. After a wild night of sex they take a trip to Bulgaria with no real plan. The experience will be unforgettable.
by Lisa Azuelos
A romantic and tender directorial come-back by Lisa Azuelos, starring Sandrine Kiberlain. MON BÉBÉ is one of the sweetest and funniest family comedies of recent years. Héloïse is a single super-mum: two daughters, one son, a few lovers and a restaurant. But her equilibrium is knocked into crisis when her youngest daughter leaves the family home to go to university.
by Félix Moati
Another family but more dramatic and dysfunctional, portrayed by Félix Moati who featured at Biografilm two years ago in the leading role of Cherchez la Femme. Moati turns to directing
with an extraordinary cast, handing the acting over to Vincent Lacoste and the protagonist of Le Tout Nouveau Testament, by Benoît Poelvoorde.
CELLE QUE VOUS CROYEZ
by Safy Nebbou
Another great french production, which we have already announced as the opening film of Biografilm Festival 2019. The director Safy Nebbou tells the passionate story of Claire, a professor of literature who meets a young photographer on Facebook. She falls in love with him. He falls in love with her. But on her profile Claire claims to be 24-year-old. Oscar-worthy Juliette Binoche carries the film on her shoulders, while Safy Nebbou enriches it with a highly elegant score and cinematography.
by Benoît Forgeard
Straight from Cannes Film Festival where it will be presented in the Quinzaine des réalisateurs, Benoît Forgeard brings to Biografilm the story of Jerem, an emerging musician in search of inspiration. Then Yves, a new type of high-tech refrigerator with artificial intelligence, enters his life...
