Contemporary Lives

(USA / 2019 / 85’)

The destiny of director Nanfu Wang was written in her name. In fact, "Nan" means "man" in Chinese. In 1985, when she was born, China had already established the One-child policy: and what a tragedy for her family, to find out that the first-born would be a girl! After challenging the Chinese government with Hooligan Sparrow (2016) and having just had a baby, the director strikes again, determined to expose the secrets of a policy which condemned millions of voices. Through interviews with both victims and executioners, One Child Nation offers a reflection on the terrifying consequences of mass- media propaganda, breaking the silence on a chapter in mankind's history that has compromised too many lives.
