Contemporary Lives

(Germany, Austria / 2019 / 98’)

It's been 40 years since the birth of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Ayatollah Khomeini sentenced thousands of his political enemies to years of grueling captivity. Among them

there were also the parents of Maryam, who’s now a successful actress. But this is not a sad story: her mother survived,  found refuge in a small town in Germany and raised her daughter with an exceptional sense of humor. Starting from the brutal circumstances of the her birth, within the walls of Evin Prison, Maryam breaks the silence that for years has overshadowed the truth and opens a door to universal pain, bringing justice to all the children whose voice has been suffocated for far too long.
