Dome Karukoski, one of the most well-regarded Finnish directors, presents the fascinating life of Tom of Finland, illustrator and designer of homoerotic images, a true icon of gay art. Winner of the FIPRESCI jury prize at the Göteborg Film Festival 2017, this beautifully shot film follows the story of Touko Laaksonen (his real name): the childhood in the 1920s and 1930s, the World War, the bohemian Helsinki of the 1950s, the complicated relationship with his sister Kaija, the many lovers and many successes. An accurate depiction of the period, bringing plenty of emotion: the story of an artist who took apart the stereotypical image of the gay male, turning it into a picture of proud virility.
