Biografilm Program 2017

The definitive program for Biografilm 2017 will be announced soon. Here is what you can look forward to!

Biografilm Festival | International Celebration of Lives, the first international cinema event entirely devoted to biographies and stories of life, returns to Bologna from 9th to 19th June 2017 for its unmissable thirteenth edition, and, like every year, promises to be rich in film premieres, big events, concerts and esteemed guests.

Following on from the last two editions, the main theme of the festival will once again be the digital revolution and the way in which new technologies influence our lives. However, in a year that saw La La Land burst across screens, another significant theme will blaze through Biografilm: that of dance, with a dedicated selection of films, both fiction and documentary, that will provide a strong thread throughout the various sections of the festival.

A wonderful example is the surprising opening film that is part of the Biografilm Europa section: THE DANCER by Stéphanie Di Giusto uncovers the story of Loïe Fuller, the celebrated protagonist of the magnificent early twentieth century Paris. Draped in metres of silk, encircled by electric lights and colours, Loïe reinvented her body for each performance, surprising audiences with her famed hypnotic ‘serpentine dance’. But an encounter with Isadora Duncan will change everything. The cast is made up by the multitalented and versatile Soko, singer, actor and performer of ever more established repute, Gaspard Ulliel, the lead in Xavier Dolan’s It’s Only the End of the World, and Lily-Rose Depp.

Also part of this thematic thread is the festival’s closing film, RESET, the spectacular documentary directed by Thierry Demaizière e Alban Teurlai on the world famous dancer and chorographer Benjamin Millepied (Black Swan) and his attempt, as Artistic Directors of the Paris Opera, to revolutionize the rules and staging of ballet.

The film will have its Italian premiere at the awards ceremony of Biografilm 2017, which will once again, after last year’s enormous success, take place in the celebrated Teatro Comunale di Bologna.

With regards to this edition’s guests, a very important name has already been confirmed: we are delighted to announce the presence of Piera Degli Esposti at Biografilm 2017, who will be the subject of a tribute and will receive the Celebration of Lives Award, the honoured recognition that Biografilm gives each year to leading cultural figures who have made a profound contribution to contemporary history.

In bestowing the Award on Piera Degli Esposti, Biografilm recognizes the undeniable talent of one of the greatest protagonists in the history of Italian theatre and cinema. Refusing to be confined to a singular role, she was able to transform herself from actor to writer and director, eventually turning her own life into the subject of the beautiful account Storia di Piera, a book co-written with Dacia Maraini and adapted to film by the directorial hand of Marco Ferreri. In the course of her career she has worked with all the most important Italian directors, from Pasolini to the Taviani Brothers, from Lina Wertmüller to Marco Bellocchio and Paolo Sorrentino, but she has also leant her talents, especially in recent years, to more experimental projects by younger and lesser-known artists.

Piera Degli Esposti’s is a fully rounded personality, who has expressed itself on countless occasions with great intensity, and she has always been prepared to put herself forward and take on new challenges. The latest of these has been in the world of dubbing: Degli Esposti has, in fact, recently leant her voice to the central character of the animated film Louise by the Shore, which enjoyed an exclusive screening in Bologna at the I Wonder Pictures Pop Up Cinema of the Oratorio di San Filippo Neri.

And it is precisely the Oratorio di San Filippo Neri, the evocative space of Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna, that will become one of the new locations of Biografilm 2017, thanks to a collaboration with Mismaonda, who also made possible the Pop Up Cinema experience.

Finally, 2017 marks an important anniversary: Biografilm School, the innovative training project promoted by Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna, celebrates its 5th year. In honour of the occasion, there will be throughout the festival a series of celebratory activities that will see the participation of alumni side by side with the students of the 2017 edition.
